A field guide to vintage camera looks

Super 8, VHS, CCD digicam, single-use 35mm and more — what each format actually did to an image, the artifacts that give it away, and how to fake it.
Every “vintage” filter is an argument about which failure to keep. A camera look is not a colour — it is a specific set of things a machine could not do, preserved because the way it failed turned out to be beautiful.
This is a reference for nine of them. For each: what the format was, what it did to an image, the artifacts that give it away, and what it is good for. Use it to name what you are looking at, or to work out why your emulation is not landing.
Super 8 (1965–)
What it was. 8mm film in a drop-in plastic cartridge, sold to families for home movies. Three-minute rolls at 18 frames per second.
What it does to an image. A small frame magnified hard, so grain is enormous and detail is soft. Kodachrome and Ektachrome stocks gave it warm, slightly unreal colour. Shooting at 18fps and projecting at 24 is where the faint hurry in old home movies comes from.
Telltales. Gate weave — the whole frame drifting a pixel or two because the film was not held perfectly. Heavy moving grain. Rounded, soft corners. Dust and hair burned into the frame. No sound on most cartridges, which is why the format reads as memory rather than document.
Good for. Anything you want to feel already remembered. Terrible for text, faces at distance, or low light.
Faking it. Grain must move every frame, and the frame itself must move — a sub-pixel jitter does more than any colour grade. Drop the frame rate before you touch the colour.
16mm (1923–)
What it was. The serious amateur and documentary format. Four times the frame area of Super 8.
What it does to an image. Real detail with visible grain. The look of news footage, student films and 1970s documentary. Less nostalgic than Super 8, more journalistic.
Telltales. Grain that is present but fine enough to resolve faces. Contrastier highlights than digital, with a soft roll rather than a clip.
Good for. Making something look observed rather than staged.
35mm still film (1934–)
What it was. The default photographic format for sixty years. Consumer colour negative — Kodak Gold, Superia, Portra — is what most people mean by “film look.”
What it does to an image. Wide latitude in the highlights and a fast falloff in the shadows, which is the opposite of digital. Skin tones that stay warm as they brighten. Colours that shift rather than clip.
Telltales. Highlights that go creamy instead of white. Shadows that block up to a muddy near-black with a colour cast in them. Fine grain that sits in the midtones, not the shadows.
Good for. Portraits and daylight. It is the most flattering of these looks and the least distinctive.
Single-use / disposable 35mm (1986–)
What it was. A cardboard box with a fixed-focus plastic lens, ISO 400 film and a flash. Sold at petrol stations and weddings.
What it does to an image. A fixed aperture of roughly f/10 and a lens with no correction, so everything is deep-focus, soft at the edges and vignetted. The flash is the whole exposure at night: subject blown out at two metres, background gone to black.
Telltales. Hard on-camera flash with a hot centre. Strong vignette. Chromatic fringing on high-contrast edges. Slight barrel distortion. Often a date stamp in orange seven-segment digits.
Good for. Parties, crowds, anything at night with people close to the camera. This is the most forgiving look in the guide because it was designed around the assumption that the photographer knew nothing.
Faking it. The vignette and the flash falloff matter more than the grain. Get close — the look depends on the subject being inside flash range and the background being outside it.
Instant film (1948–)
What it was. Polaroid and Instax — film that develops in your hand.
What it does to an image. Low contrast in a specific way: milky, lifted blacks, compressed dynamic range, and a colour balance that drifts toward cyan or amber depending on the stock and the temperature it developed at.
Telltales. Blacks that are never black. A soft overall glow. Uneven development across the frame. The white border, though that is packaging, not optics.
Good for. Soft light and still subjects. Poor at motion and hopeless in the dark.
MiniDV camcorder (1995–)
What it was. The first widely affordable digital video format. Tape, but digital.
What it does to an image. Standard definition, interlaced, 4:3 by default. Clean and slightly cold compared to VHS, because the recording itself was digital — the softness came from the lens and the sensor, not the tape.
Telltales. Interlacing combs on fast motion. Aggressive auto-exposure that visibly hunts when you pan toward a window. Autofocus that breathes. Timecode and a date burned into the corner.
Good for. Early-2000s home-video register. The camcorder look people actually grew up with, as opposed to the VHS one they inherited.
VHS and VHS-C (1976–)
What it was. Analogue magnetic tape, and the format most home movies were stored on even when they were shot on something else.
What it does to an image. About 240 lines of horizontal resolution and severe colour bandwidth limiting, so colour smears sideways across edges. Every copy was worse than the last.
Telltales. Chroma bleed — red and blue running horizontally out of saturated objects. Head-switching noise: a band of torn static across the bottom few lines of frame. Tracking wobble. Tape dropout as brief white flecks. Ghosting after bright objects move.
Good for. Dread, distance, artificiality. VHS is the least neutral look here — it always reads as a copy of something rather than a record of it.
Faking it. Chroma bleed is the ingredient people skip and the one that does the work. Blur the colour channels horizontally, hard, and leave luminance alone. Uniform noise over the whole frame is what makes most VHS filters look fake.
CCD digicam (1998–2010)
What it was. The compact digital camera, before phones ate it. CCD sensors, small lenses, 2 to 8 megapixels.
What it does to an image. CCDs rendered colour differently from the CMOS sensors in every phone today — cooler, with a teal-and-magenta lean and highlights that clip abruptly instead of rolling off. Combine that with heavy in-camera JPEG compression and a hard direct flash.
Telltales. Highlights that hit pure white with no gradient. Chroma noise in the shadows — coloured speckle rather than grey grain. Visible JPEG blocking in smooth areas like skies. Orange date stamp. 4:3 aspect ratio. On video: low frame rates and mono audio.
Good for. The Y2K and indie-sleaze register. Currently the most imitated look on this list — there is a whole separate guide to getting it on video.
Medium format (1900s–)
What it was. 120 roll film, three to four times the area of 35mm. Studio and landscape work.
What it does to an image. Almost no grain, enormous tonal separation, and a shallow depth of field at equivalent framing that no phone lens reproduces honestly. Square, in the 6×6 case.
Telltales. Smooth gradients in skies and skin. A square frame. Detail that stays crisp where you expect a small format to fall apart.
Good for. Stillness. It is the one look here that reads as expensive rather than old.
Choosing between them
If you are picking a look for a specific shot rather than browsing:
- Night, people, flash, chaos → single-use 35mm or CCD digicam.
- Daylight, faces, warmth → 35mm colour negative.
- Memory, childhood, no dialogue → Super 8.
- Something is wrong here → VHS.
- This happened in 2003 → MiniDV or CCD digicam.
- Nothing is moving and it is beautiful → medium format or instant.
The mistake worth avoiding is treating these as interchangeable colour presets. Each one came with a way of shooting attached — a distance, a light source, a length. Single-use film taught people to get close because the flash only reached two metres. Super 8 taught people to shoot short because a cartridge held three minutes. If you shoot the way the format made people shoot, the look mostly takes care of itself.

Common questions
What is the difference between film grain and video noise?
Grain is physical: clumps of silver halide crystals in the emulsion, so it is irregular, sits in the midtones, and changes shape frame to frame. Video noise is electrical: it comes from the sensor and the tape, tends to concentrate in shadows and in the colour channels, and on VHS it smears horizontally rather than sitting still. Adding uniform digital noise to footage reads as neither.
Which vintage look is the most forgiving to shoot?
Single-use 35mm. It was designed for people who did not know what they were doing, so the look already assumes hard flash, dead-centre framing and blown highlights. Super 8 and instant film are the least forgiving because both need real light.
Do vintage looks work on video, or only photos?
Both, but the artifacts differ. Anything that changes frame to frame — grain, gate weave, tape noise, light leaks — has to move on video or it looks like a sticker on the lens. That is why a still-photo filter applied to a clip rarely convinces.
